In Ghana’s Eastern Region, a school has built its identity on resilience. For years, its students have taken part in the Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Prize (GSTEP) Challenge. Some teams advanced, others fell short, yet the determination to return never faded.
Year after year, this school has entered the Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Prize (GSTEP) Challenge. Some years brought celebrations, others brought tears. Some teams advanced, others didn’t. But the ones who failed didn’t become invisible; they became part of the school’s story too.

After months of preparation, their project did not progress. The setback was discouraging, but with guidance from their teacher, they joined the GSTEP Perseverance Awards Programme, carrying with them the lessons learned.

Their teacher stood by them, reminding the students that progress is not measured by flawless ideas but by the courage to keep trying. “We thought our ideas were not good, but our teacher told us not to give up.”

That commitment has borne fruit. In 2025, a new team from the same school earned a place among the GSTEP finalists. Their success has become a source of pride within the school and a sign that persistence pays off. As they explained, “Being a 2025 GSTEP finalist gives us hope.”

The atmosphere in the school has changed. Classrooms are no longer quiet; they are filled with voices that are eager to contribute to STEM discussions . Students who once held back now raise their hands with confidence, ready to share their ideas. Science has moved beyond the textbook into practical work and prototypes are taking shape on their desks. What began as a competition has become a catalyst, reshaping how students learn and how the school sees its future.
Parents also noticed the difference at home. They speak of children who are more determined, who stay focused on their prototypes, and who no longer give up easily. In the community, people say the school feels renewed, and that its students carry themselves with confidence, grace, and purpose.
This achievement is not only about one team’s success, it belongs to every student of Azza M/A Basic School in the Yilo Krobo Municipality. Their story also carries a lesson for all young people: a setback is not the end of the journey—it can be the beginning of greater opportunities.
