Eastern Region: 2025 GSTEP Industry Visit to Accra Compost and Recycling Plant
In the Eastern Region, the GSTEP 2025 Industry Visit offered an opportunity for 15 finalist teams to connect their innovative ideas with real-world STEM applications. Held at the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, the visit provided students, teachers, and STEM Coordinators with an immersive experience into how science and technology are used to transform waste into valuable resources.
From the moment they stepped onto the site, participants were guided through critical areas of the facility; starting from the weighing bridge, to the curing site, waste sorting zones, and pyrolysis machines. They witnessed firsthand how biodegradable waste is processed and how plastic waste is converted into commercial-grade plastic pellets.
For many students, especially those working on waste management solutions, this visit brought their projects to life. Seeing the technology and systems in action gave them a deeper understanding of how STEM principles are applied to solve environmental challenges. It also provided inspiration for improving their Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) as they head toward the pitching and judging events of the GSTEP Challenge.
The energy, thoughtful questions, and curiosity displayed by the young learners highlighted the impact of hands-on learning. The visit not only strengthened their technical insights but also reinforced GSTEP’s mission to nurture the next generation of STEM-powered changemakers.
