GSTEP Finalist Induction Event – September, 2022

The Ghana Science & Tech Explorer Prize (GSTEP) Challenge is proceeding into its next phase with induction events for 50 selected finalists of the Challenge. Over 800 entries were received and assessed by independent assessors, of which 50 finalists were chosen to participate in the challenge prize. 25 finalists were selected from the Greater Accra region and 25 from the Ashanti region. These finalists will be inducted into the Challenge at the GSTEP Finalist Induction event to be held separately in Greater Accra and Ashanti regions.

The Finalist Induction events are being held to bring all finalists together to integrate them into the programme and prepare them for the activities lined up. Finalists will be given an overview of the programme and their expectations from them. They will also participate in a series of workshops aimed at providing them with skills to enable them carry out their activities effectively during the programme. The workshops will focus on STEM-based education, team building and collaboration, entrepreneurial skills, business plan development, prototyping, and project development. The finalists will participate in a drone flying experience led by Ghana Flying Labs. They will also have the opportunity to meet with their mentors, who are experts in various fields and will guide them through the programme.

After the induction events, finalists will participate in a series of activities and programmes to equip them for the Challenge and provide them with resources and skills to excel after the Challenge. Finalists will be mentored by experts in various fields including science, technology, engineering, business and mathematics to build their knowledge, skill set and awareness in STEM and entrepreneurship. The finalists will receive coaching to guide them in developing prototypes for their ideas. Through GSTEP’s industry partners, finalists will participate in industry visits to give them on hand experience on how innovative ideas are churned into solutions. Finalists will also have 7 weeks to develop prototypes of the solutions they proposed in their entries.

The GSTEP Challenge is a challenge prize for JHS students and teachers in Greater Accra and Ashanti regions to excite and encourage them to develop practical STEM skills and products that benefit local communities. The GSTEP programme is run by a consortium of 5 organizations led by DreamOval Foundation, in partnership with Challenge Works, UK, MEST Africa, DEXT Technology & Foundervine, UK.

GSTEP is funded by Fondation Botnar, a Swiss philanthropic foundation working to improve the health and well-being of young people living in cities around the world. Advocating for the inclusion of youth voices and the equitable use of AI and digital technology, the foundation invests in and supports innovative programs and research, and brings together actors from across sectors to create dialogue and partnerships: www.fondationbotnar.org.

The program is also supported by key institutions in Ghana to advance the course of practical learning across the two regions. These key institutions are Fidelity Bank, Stanbic Bank, Multimedia Group, and Graphic Communications Group. The GSTEP Challenge is in its second year and is focused on improving the quality of education, creating opportunities for the youth, and providing solutions for local communities through STEM.
