Celebrating STEM Excellence: Highlights from the 2025 GSTEP Exhibition & Awards Ceremony

The 2025 Ghana Science & Tech Explorer Prize (GSTEP) Exhibition and Awards Ceremony, held on July 16–17 at the National Theatre in Accra, brought together students, educators, policymakers, and industry leaders to celebrate the groundbreaking ideas of Ghana’s next generation of STEM changemakers.

Under the theme “STEM Education and its Role in Addressing Disparities in Educational Access and Infrastructure in Ghana”, the two-day event spotlighted the creativity and resilience of 50 finalist teams and 7 perseverance teams from the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Hon. Clement Apaak, Deputy Minister for Education; Dr. Munauaru Issahaque, Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service; and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister for Education. The event also welcomed high-level representatives from the Ghana Education Service, the Ministry of Education, AngloGold Ashanti, Fidelity Bank, Melcom, Special Ice, Stanbic Bank, UNICEF, and other industry partners.

The exhibition on Day 1 opened with energy as students presented their prototypes—ranging from water purification systems to AI-driven safety solutions, among others—to the general public. Simultaneously, the YSG Perseverance Judging took place, spotlighting the projects developed by 7 outstanding teams that had been selected under GSTEP’s Perseverance Awards Programme. These teams represented stories of second chances and their participation underscored GSTEP’s belief that innovation thrives through persistence.

A Students’ Workshop was also held to introduce visiting school children to the GSTEP challenge and educate them on how to apply for the next challenge. At the same time, the GSTEP Alumni Workshop convened over 30 past participants and their teachers to explore new ways of contributing to their communities and improving their STEM projects beyond the challenge.

The event featured cultural performances, keynote addresses, and the premiere of the GSTEP Impact Stories—three mini-documentaries showcasing the transformative role of STEM in classrooms, schools, and communities. From teachers sparking student curiosity to a school nurturing resilience year after year and a community rallying behind a finalist team, these stories reflected the deeper purpose of the GSTEP Challenge.

As the curtains closed on the 2025 GSTEP season, one message rang loud and clear: when young people are given the right tools, mentorship, and platform, STEM becomes not just a subject but a vehicle for change. GSTEP continues to shape Ghana’s future, one young innovator at a time.
